“I barely got my foot in the door. But I eventually did. And I’d hate to imagine that door closing on anyone, because that person couldn’t afford to work for free. Consider donating to ProPublica’s Kickstarter. We need to change this.” —

Thanks, Ernie, for your thoughtful essay on your own career path. I also count myself among the lucky ones who were able to make things work (in my case, with an unpaid internship). But we know so many others haven’t been as fortunate.

“I responded in what I thought was the most truthful, or least untruthful manner by saying no.” —

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, explaining why he asserted in March that the NSA was not gathering data on millions of Americans in an interview with NBC’s Andrea Mitchell.  (via officialssay)

If by no, you meant yes.

“If you’re wondering why it’s hard to find people from low-income backgrounds in elite journalism—which, disproportionately, means people of color—look no further than this. The only people who can afford to work full-time for free come from wealth, and generally, if you’re wealthy in America, you’re white.” —

News flash: Just today, a federal judge sided with two unpaid interns, ruling that Fox Searchlight Pictures violated minimum wage laws by not paying them for their production work on the film ‘Black Swan.’ The judge said the interns were essentially regular employees and “called for following criteria that the Department of Labor has laid out for unpaid internships,” per the New York Times.

ProPublica is looking into this very issue — for unpaid interns who are exploited, and for those who are excluded entirely — and we need your help. If you have been an unpaid intern, we want to hear from you! You can share your story with us here. We know this is a sensitive subject, and we won’t share your personal information.

We are also running a kickstarter campaign to hire an intern to help us investigate unpaid internships. We have 15 days to raise more than $15,000, a goal we can surely achieve with your help.

So please, consider a donation. And if nothing else, share this post. Every story counts. Thank you!!

“The way things are supposed to work is that we’re supposed to know virtually everything about what they do: that’s why they’re called public servants. They’re supposed to know virtually nothing about what we do: that’s why we’re called private individuals. This dynamic - the hallmark of a healthy and free society - has been radically reversed.” —The Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald on the rise of the Surveillance State.

“In short, there’s no better time, Prospective Interns of America, to ditch, at one blow, your dreams about jobs with long-term prospects, dependable funding for investigative journalism, and an academic community that doesn’t charge its students to participate in unrewarding work, and to up sticks and hit the road with ProPublica for what should prove to be a highly enlightening—and hopefully, galvanizing—investigation.” —

Welcome to English to English

english2english:

Right, then. Prince Harry’s visit to the USA is as good a time as any to point out that the mutual curiosity shared between British and American cultures is as intense as ever. It’s also a good time to launch this Tumblr.

When Winston Churchill coined the phrase “special relationship” to describe the connection between the two nations in 1946, he was describing two countries whose commitments to similar ideals – for better or worse – have historically meant a keen interest in each other. “Special”, sometimes, doesn’t even begin to cover it.

For all those Britishisms I don’t get, Katie Rogers and crew create a new “living glossary” of English-to-English translations. Fun.

“So many lines are being crossed in so many directions, it is tough to keep track of who are the victims and who are the perpetrators. There has always been a cat-and-mouse game between government and the media, between the coverers and the covered, but increased reliance on technology has weaponized something that used to take spycraft and shoe leather.” —David Carr, on the two-way street of snooping.

“Now whether she was better roasted, boiled or carbonado’d (barbecued), I know not, but of such a dish as powdered wife I never heard of.” —Capt. John Smith’s account of one colonist’s murder by cannibalism. According to scientists, archaeological evidence now proves that American settlers in fact turned to cannibalism for survival.
